Faith, technology and the week’s questions

A discussion briefing on spiritual guidance, human responsibility and discerning uses of AI. Published September 25, 2026.

The question for leaders

When an AI system offers spiritual guidance, who accepts responsibility for the advice? Begin with the distinction between retrieving a passage and exercising pastoral judgment. Reading a fluent answer is not the same as knowing the character, competence or accountability of its author.

Christian reflection

James 3:13–18 locates wisdom in a life marked by good conduct, peace and mercy. A machine can reproduce the vocabulary of those virtues without living them. That distinction does not make every use of AI wrong; it asks a church to judge tools by how they serve people, tell the truth and keep responsible human relationships intact. First Thessalonians 5:21 encourages examination rather than either automatic acceptance or indiscriminate rejection.

A practical conversation this week

Choose one task your church or family already uses AI for. Identify the information it receives, the person who checks its output, and the person who remains answerable if it is wrong. If none is clearly responsible, establish that responsibility before broadening use.

Names are the opening question. Product promises, design choices and the setting of use tell us more about the relationship being offered.
